First HD video of the oil leak.
BP has had high resolution video all along and bitterly protested its release, and you can see why. The low-res web streams were disturbing enough, but the extra detail makes it so much more horrific. It really looks like a font of hell itself.
Besides the visceral impact, they’ve been motivated to keep it hidden because it allows outside observers to better estimate the rate of flow (in part by tracking particles rushing upwards in the stream.) Here’s two more views that show it better close up.
No wonder they didn’t let James Cameron down there, by now we’d be watching it in 3D.
Lantern Floating Hawaii Ceremony (2010) (by Rex Maximilian)
This is the 12th annual lantern floating ceremony in Honolulu done over Memorial Day at Ala Moana Beach Park at dusk. It started as a small affair in 1999 by the local Japanese Shinnyo-en. It has blossomed in a strong tradition in only its twelfth year. The beach was lined with thousands of people from all over the world with lanterns ready to be set afloat with the names of, and words written to their loved ones who have passed.
